Common Issues and Tips

  1. Close / Exit any tax program running during Download and Install. Otherwise, you may get a failure message 'Output cannot be created'.

  2. Depending on firewall(s) used you may get messages such as it may harm your computer or other rejection messages.
    Look for buttons called actions, more, etc and select the one that allows you to proceed with the installation.

  3. Antivirus and Firewalls can affect installation and also internet connection for Efiling by blocking proper installation or program operation without warning. It may also delete a program icon that was created for launching the program.

    Your best option is to use the exclusion list of your Firewall which tells your Firewall what to allow.

    Programs and folders you can add to the exclusion list include:

    • Downloadable tax modules EXE files: vt2020SetUpFull.EXE, vt2020TaxModulesUpdate
    • Virtual Office modules: vtSignPdfSetUp.EXE, vtCourierSetUp.EXE, vtClientSetUp.EXE, etc
    • Installation Folders (where you install programs): C:/VT-2020, C:/VT-2019, C:/vtClient, etc.

    You may also disable your Antivirus and Firewall during installation.

Installation

Method 1

Click on a file to download (ComComp.EXE, T1Full07, TRFull07, T2FULL08, etc.) and select 'Open'. This will download the file in a temporary folder and allow you to install it (SetUp).

Icons will be automatically generated via the Set up process described above. You can find the icons by clicking the Start button then All Programs, then by locating the VisualTax folder. The executable programs (after installation) have names in the pattern of T12007.EXE, T22008.EXE, TF2007.EXE, and T42007.EXE and they will be located in the default folders of C:\T1-2007, C:\T2-2008, C:\TF-2007, C:\T4-2007, C:\FP-2008 respectively.

Please note that there is no icon created with the installation of the common components.

Click on the icon such as T12007 and the program will load. The first time it will ask you for an 'Authorization Key'. Enter the key you received via EMail.

To find the icon created, click on Start, then Click on Programs then click on VisualTax. You can copy the icon to your desktop if that is what you prefer (drag it with your mouse).


If you have prior years programs in an old machine and you are installing on a new machine:

It would be faster if you just copy the full program folder from your old machine to the new machine, using a flash drive or your network. For example to install the T1-2006: Copy folder C:\T1-2006 from the old machine to the new machine. This brings over the configuration items and also the data, provided the data folder was a subfolder of the program folder i.e. C:\T1-2006\data. However you must install the ComComp.exe (common Components) from this page. See above.


In addition you should create the Icon for launching the program: Right click on the desktop and select New-> Shortcut and enter for example C:\T1-2006\t12006.exe

If you want to copy the icon from your desktop to the start -> All Programs -VisualTax do the following:

a. Right click on the desktop icon and click Edit -> Copy

b. Click on Start -> All programs and scroll until you see VisualTax. Then right click VisualTax and click Edit->Paste

The alternative way is to click the programs below and do a full installation and configuration.



Firewall and Antivirus

IMPORTANT SUGGESTION: Use the Exclusion capability of your Firewall


Antivirus and Firewalls can affect installation and also internet connection for Efiling by blocking proper installation or program operation without warning.

Temporarily disabling the firewall and adding VisuatTax to the exclusion list can help.

Programs and folders you can add to the exclusion list include:

  • Downloadable tax modules EXE files: vt2020SetUpFull.EXE, vt2020TaxModulesUpdate
  • Virtual Office modules: vtSignPdfSetUp.EXE, vtCourierSetUp.EXE, vtClientSetUp.EXE, etc
  • Installation Folders where you install programs: C:/VT-2020, C:/VT-2019, C:/vtClient, etc.

General

  1. Copy the FULL folders from the old machine to the new machine. You can copy them from the old machine into a flash drive. Then copy the same folders from the flash drive into the new computer.
    1. Program folder (i.e. C:\vt-20XX, saves time in reconfiguring name, folders, settings, etc...)
    2. Data folders (i.e. C:\vt\t1-20XX\data)
  2. Download the program vt-20XX from www.visualtax.com/download.php and install it in C:\vt-20xx to have a formal installation for Windows.

Repeat for other years


Right click on the desktop and select New-> Shortcut and enter for example C:\VT-2019\VT2019.exe

Then click Next and enter a short name such as VT-2019

Some users have reported difficulties in installing (unzipping) the downloaded installation files (i.e. when double clicking on a downloaded file nothing happens)

  1. Disable any Anti-virus program you may be running
  2. Right click on the downloaded file i.e. T1Full04.exe instead of double clicking on it.
  3. Click on the "Extract to" item of the pop-up list*
  4. In the "Extract to" box enter C:\Temp and then click the Extract button then close the window.
  5. use Start | Run and enter C:\Temp\SetUp.EXE -or- use the Explorer and find C:\Temp and double click on the SetUp.EXE

* If the pop-up does not display an "Extract to" item then you need to download and install WINZIP from www.winzip.com


Updates are issued during the tax season which includes improvements suggested by our clients, mandatory changes that may originate from Revenue Canada (such as delayed forms) or program bugs that must be fixed. To get the optimum performance from the program you should visit this site from time to time. Any update with a date later than the date indicated on the main window of your program most likely will be worth taking. The update you download contains all changes made since the Jan. 31 release of the program. Your original disks plus the latest update you download is the full set you need for an up-to-date re-installation, if that need arises in the future.


If you have not installed properly the 'Common Components' you will get a message such as 'Required DLL is missing'. Ensure that you download and install the Common Components (ComComp.exe). Also see the Download and Installation instructions


Copy the PROGRAM folders from your old computer to the new computer, using the same program folders.

  • For the old programs prior to 2016, that retains the settings and no other download is needed
  • or
  • For the newer VT-xxxx programs (vt-2016, vt-2017 and vt-2018), after the copying, you need to re-download the programs from the web site.
