Transfer

This involves the transfer of the program(s) and also the data.

For instructions on how to use Copy and Paste please refer to your Windows help instructions

Transferring programs and data

In all cases you need to install the Common Components (ComComp.exe) from the Downloads page of the VisualTax web site (www.visualtax.com) or from your most recent CD. This is required by all VisualTax programs in order to run. Otherwise, you will get an error such as vcl50.bpl was not found.

Specific Tax Programs

Suppose you have the T1-2009 installed and running on Machine A and you want to transfer it to Machine B.

Assuming that the program has been installed using the program defaults, there will be a folder by the name C:\T1- 2009 in machine A.

Use your Windows Explorer and find that folder.

You need to copy this whole folder from machine A to the C drive of machine B (NOT to c:\T1-2009).

You can accomplish this by using your network or an intermediate storage such a flash drive or a CD.

If the Data (tax returns) was on the same folder i.e. C:\T1-2009\Data this operation copies both the program and the data and all the configuration parameters you used in Machine A.

Users who deviate from our defaults and use other folders for program installation or data location should use a similar procedure.

Transferring only data

If you already installed a program such as T1-2009 on Machine B, then you need to transfer (Copy) only the data (the tax returns).

First click Configure -> General Options -> Data Directories and mark down the Current Directory path of the data. That folder is where the program expects to find the tax returns.

Use the network or a flash drive or a CD and Copy ALL files from the Data Directory of Machine A to Machine B. This includes ALL files listed with the SIN of your clients as well as the files Clients.DBF and Clients.MDX. You can also copy the full data folder: Assuming that the data folder is C:\T1-2009\data then you copy and paste the Data folder (C:\T1-2009\Data) into the C:\T1-2009 of the second machine (Not into C:\T1-2009\data).

Creating a program shortcut

There is no shortcut created when using the above procedures. It would, if you used the standard windows install (download from the web or via CD, as fresh installation but you would have to re-enter your program authorization key, all your configuaration parameters, apply updates, transfer the data separatelly, etc).

To create a shortcut, right click your desktop and select New and select Shortcut. Enter target accordingly. i.e. for T1-2009 program you would enter C:\T1-2009\t12009.exe and in the Start-in folder enter C:\T1-2009 (Note C:\T1-2009 is the folder where the program has been installed and T12009.exe is the program name. Use similar names for other programs and years i.e. for the T2-2010 enter C:\T2-2010\T22010.exe in the target box and and C:\T2-2010 in the stat-in box.

Standard Windows Install

You can by re-downloading/installing the program and any update available. A shortcut is created automatically in Start -> (All) Programs -> VisualTax

After running the program via the shortcut, you need to enter:

  • the Program Authorization Key
  • Your configuration parameters and other customization options you used in Machine A such as Print Templates, Client Letters, etc. OPTION: You can use Export Configuration in Machine A and mark down where the configuration is saved, typically in folder C:\t1-2009config. This folder needs to be copied to machine B. Then use Import Configuration in Machine B

Transfer your data separately as described above.
